State Requirements

Under a new state law known as SB277, beginning January 1, 2016, exemptions based on personal beliefs will no longer be an option for the vaccines that are currently required for entry into child care or school in California.

California law, Education Code Section 49452.8, now requires that your child have an oral health assessment (dental check-up) by May 31 in either kindergarten or first grade, whichever is his or her first year in public school.

Additional oral health assessment resources available (pdf format):

(Optional for kindergarten entry)
Although a physical examination is not required for your child to begin kindergarten, a physical examination is required within 18 months of first grade entry. If you are taking your child to the physician for immunizations and a physical examination on or after February 1, 2016, the physical would be valid for your child’s entry into first grade in the 17/18 school year. The form to take to your physician is available here.
